The Studio Lévin, composed of the duo formed by Sam Lévin (1904-1992) and Lucienne Chevert (1908-1983), made more than 250,000 shots during nearly fifty years of an almost common career.
As soon as they met in 1934, the two partners became studio photographers. Individually or in tandem, they worked on more than 70 films between 1934 and 1970.
At the request of the producers, they photographed the scenes being shot, but also portraits in the studio, intended for the promotion of the films and which established their characteristic style.
Close to the directors and actors, they were in the front row to capture snapshots on film sets. They photographed Louis Jouvet and Bernard Blier, asleep between two shots on the filming of the Quai des Orfèvres. Lucienne Chevert was a renowned studio photographer who even inspired the role of the photographer Simone Renan played in the film.
Historically, Quai des Orfèvres marked the return to the plateaux of Henri Georges-Clouzot, rehabilitated after a ban on practice pronounced by a purification committee, due in particular to Corbeau (1943), a film then considered as an act of collaboration.
Also condemned to the Liberation, Suzy Delair, who was his companion, obtained one of his greatest roles there. After notable films such as The Last of the Six (for which Clouzot had written the script) and The Assassin lives at 21, Quai des Orfèvres was their last joint film before their separation.
This photograph illustrates the complicity that united him with Louis Jouvet, his partner in several other shootings.

The Lévin Fund at the MPP

The Sam Lévin donation was made by his wife, Simone Lévin, on June 6, 1997. It includes 250,000 negatives, 150 reading and contact print boxes, and 30 miscellaneous print boxes. The entire fund is maintained by the MPP at Fort Saint-Cyr in Montigny-le-Bretonneux (Yvelines).
