Dedicated to Saint Louis, the chapel of the Military School presents a unique collection of nine giant canvases tracing the life of Louis IX. The altar, whose decoration is due to Caffieri, takes the form of a tomb. The communion grid was made by Fayet.
The young Napoleon Bonaparte received the sacred confirmation there in 1785. Open to worship until the Revolution, the chapel then served as a warehouse and was not returned to its normal use until 1950. Pope John Paul II came to pray there on June 2, 1980, during his first visit to France. We can still see the Prie-Dieu on which he knelt.

Ange-Jacques Gabriel was chosen to design and ensure the construction of the buildings. In 1773, the work was completed. The royal courtyard is framed by porticoes with Doric columns on the ground floor and Ionic upstairs. The central body or castle dominates it without ostentation, decorated with colossal Corinthian columns and surmounted by a quadrangular dome. In 1780, the architect Gabriel being 82 years old, the architect Boullée, then the architect Théodore Brongniart who completes the work and finishes in particular the side pavilions of the castle.
