This year’s theme ("Lasting Heritage") gives us the opportunity to ask ourselves because the Church of the Immaculate Conception is very sick! (But we take care of it!). Over time, the sea air loaded with salt and moisture degraded the stones, the slates and the frames of the stained glass windows. A restoration had become absolutely necessary to stop the degradation and give it a new youth that allows it to bear witness to its history and that of the men who built it, those men who used stone, wood, slate, sand, pigments…
It is to bear witness to this history, that of the men who built it, who modified it, and who restore it, that we propose to you to live a visit of one hour in this building, object of so much care, and to perhaps feel the events that took place there. A visit to live the restoration, and remember ... An individual and collective experience...
Stone or slate cutters, carpenters, master glassmakers or glaziers, are currently working on the restoration of the church of Wimereux. They have a know-how that crosses eras and constitutes a whole part of our intangible heritage. These ancestral practices used natural resources that were thought to be inexhaustible. Today we know how fragile they are. But the transmission of traditional techniques and re-employment are once again assets to build the world of tomorrow!
