Reconstruction of missing boats
Friendly meeting with Jean-Louis GAUCHER
Jean-Louis GAUCHER offers a friendly meeting around his investigations, research and reconstruction of missing boats.
A MODEL OF THE BOAT OF SAINT JOHN BAPTIST CHURCH OF BERCK
This is a hypothetical reconstruction of a 16th century boat represented in the form of a sculpture in the buttocks of a lamp located on the left in the choir of the church Saint Jean Baptiste de Berck. This sculpture of 24cm in length represents a boat, whose planking is built to clin. The master of the vessel on the right, near the rudder, was holding a fish, indicating that it was a fishing vessel, probably a "dreigeur".
THE BOAT OF BEUTIN
The search of the vessel was conducted between 2005 and 2010. The built model is a 15th century transport boat with a flat bottom but with an evolutionary and partial shape. It is probably a gribanne (hypothesis) of the family of cogues of the late Middle Ages; boat well known by the texts but of which we have neither drawing nor writing describing it.
Jean-Louis GAUCHER, former draftsman, and mechanic in aeronautics, is passionate about naval modeling, Member of the Regional Federation for Maritime Culture and Heritage, he is the author of the book «Les Bateaux et la pêche à Berck XVIIIème – XXème siècles» to Nord Avril.
