Created in 1857, the Soissons Museum of Art and History has been housed in the buildings of the former Saint-Léger Abbey since 1933\. This abbey takes its name from a bishop of Autun, Léger, martyred in the seventh century. Founded in 1139, the abbey follows a community of secular canons whose earliest mention dates from 1070, but its creation may date back to the High Middle Ages.
The abbey flourished in the twelfth century and its reconstruction, according to the codes of Gothic aesthetics, began in 1200\. The Hundred Years' War dealt him a fatal blow; the abbey no longer had the means to maintain the buildings. The occupation of the town by the Protestants in 1567-1568 led to the ruin of the church and convent. Attached in 1660 to the Congregation of France, the abbey rebuilt and rebuilt the conventual buildings that have housed the municipal services since the twentieth century (library and museums).
