Stonemasons, carpenters, roofers, master glassmakers present their know-how.
Around them: associations work on the development of the Wimereusian Patrioine, and present their actions on their respective stands:
- Friends of the Church (AEICW)
- the Wimereux charm,
- Valorisons Wimereux,
- NFACC (Commission Nationale de Sauvegarde du Patrimoine Funéraire) as part of the restoration of the funerary monument of Abbé Lebègue, founder of the church of Wimereux, around which the City was built gradually and acquired the status of commune in its own right a few decades after the construction of this church. This funerary monument is located in the cemetery of Wimille, next to that of Théophile Dobelle, described by some as "Founder of Wimereux", who will also benefit from the care of the CNSPF. These two monuments are memorials to the history of Wimereux.
Do you really know who Father Lebègue was? For more information: appointment at the stand of the associations working for the valorization of the heritage in Wimereux;
This year’s theme (SUSTAINABLE HERITAGE) gives us the opportunity to ask ourselves because the church that Abbé Lebègue has handed down to us is very sick! Over time, the sea air loaded with salt and moisture degraded the stones, slates and frames of the stained glass windows. A restoration has become absolutely necessary to stop the degradation and give it a new youth that allows it to bear witness to its history and that of the men who built it, those men who used stone, wood, slate, sand, pigments…
It is the same for our seaside heritage or the coastal battery of the Crèche that must be taken care of, the city of Wimereux having on its territory these three representative elements of religious, civil and military architecture.
Stonemasons and slate cutters, carpenters, master glassmakers and glaziers, have a know-how that crosses the eras and constitutes a whole part of our intangible heritage. These ancestral practices used natural resources that were thought to be inexhaustible. Today we know how fragile they are. But the transmission of traditional techniques and re-employment are once again assets to build the world of tomorrow!
