At the beginning of the century, the project of the construction of the high school, or Städtische Höhere Töchterschule, meets the need to find, near the historic center of Strasbourg, a convenient and spacious establishment that can accommodate young girls in Alsace annexed by imperial Germany. From 1901, construction began on the site of the former Pontonniers barracks on the outskirts of the Neustadt. The building, designed by the chief architect of the City of Strasbourg, Johann Carl Ott, is in historicist style and testifies to the revival of regional architecture. A local manifesto of the Heimatschutz, the building combines references to Gothic and Renaissance styles and borrows details from emblematic Strasbourg buildings to form the aesthetic taste of young girls through didactic illustrations.
