The configuration of cemeteries has changed a lot over the years: from the Revolution to 1843 regulations have been formulated, in order to remedy several problems: unhealthy, creation and financing, surface area...
In 1843, concessions were widespread, but the idea of aid for care was retained. One-third of the money collected is donated to a charitable hospital. They are of three types: perpetual, thirty-year-old and temporary. In 1928, the fifty-year concession was added.
The municipality of Thionville, complying with the decree, decided to establish a new cemetery in Saint-François. Burials have not been done within the enclosure since the middle of the 18th century but in a plot adjacent to the chapel of the Lepers, a few meters from the place planned for this new cemetery. The space had to be insufficient to continue to use it and it certainly had to be too close to the homes of the neighborhood.
