Fontaine des Quatre Lions

Raon-l'Étape has 12 fountains spread throughout the city. In the 19th century, progress is underway. Important civil engineering works such as source collection, water supply and sanitation are carried out in the city. Running water became necessary both to improve the daily life of the inhabitants and the hygiene of the city, as well as to fight the frequent fires at the time. From 1863 to 1893, 12 fountains were built in different districts.
They are real works of art in cast iron that are similar to replicas of works of the Louvre Museum.
The most imposing, characterized by four lions, was originally in front of the town hall. It was transferred in 1930 to its current location on Jules Ferry Street to make way for the War Memorial. Ceres, the statue that crowned it, was stolen at the end of the Second World War. A new statue was installed on July 13, 1992.
Note that the emblem of Raon-l'Étape, a statue of a winged lion, finds its origin here.
