Polissoirs, then remains of construction attest to an occupation of the site of Thenay in prehistory then during antiquity; the village was formed around its church, whose origins date back to the twelfth century, and its seigneurial manor, baptized the "Grand House". The village center also has the remains of a lime kiln, witness of the exploitation of the limestone of Beauce, extracted in the town and in the neighboring town of Pontlevoy, for construction and for fertilizer, a washing house, but also, many graffiti left by American soldiers during the First World War.
