Before the defensive post of the royal Capetian domain, facing the Duchy of Normandy, the fortified complex was erected in the twelfth century by Hugh II of Châteauneuf, lord of the Thymerais. The originality of the construction lies in its keep-gate in flint and grison stone, placed at the entrance of the castral ensemble to control the arrivals. Recently restored, the castle now houses a modern museum space honoring its natural heritage: the forest. The state forest of Senonches is the largest forest in the department of Eure-et-Loir and one of the largest in France. The castle is located in the heart of this «green lung». Within an interactive and educational path adapted to any audience, you are sensitized to the forest ecosystem before discovering all the riches of the Senonchoise forest. History of the forest but also Forest of Stories… you discover both the lives of these men and women who lived and made it live. Understanding the forest will make you aware of the challenges it
