The first castle was not at the site of the present ruins; it consisted of a feudal clod surmounted by a wooden tower, of which only the name remains. An imposing fortress was then built around the 11th or 12th century on a rocky outcrop overlooking the plain. It is then fitted out for firearms with mouths and casemates. In 1598, at the request of the inhabitants, Henri IV ordered its destruction; only the remains remain today, including a dungeon called «large» which underlines the importance of the town as a stronghold in the Middle Ages, as well as the courtines of the lower court. These remains have been inscribed as historic monuments since 1926..
