Who has never dreamed of discovering, by chance of a walk, or deciphering a map found in an attic, the secret hiding place of a pirate and his treasure made of thousands of gold coins, precious stones and ancient objects? For this new exhibition, l'Abri invites you to embark on a ship leaving for the Caribbean, to discover the forbans who reigned as masters on the seas of the West Indies. Pirates? Privateers? Flibustiers? Boucaniers? If it is sometimes difficult to understand these names, the exhibition will give you the keys to see more clearly among all these bandits of the seas. We will also go with them to the places of their misdeeds, to understand why they acted there and what their living conditions were on board. Eye patch, wooden leg, parrot on the shoulder... The images of the pirates are conveyed by the photographs that follow us since the first novels written on the subject. Treasure Island was the birthplace of our childhoods and Long John Silver has long been the pirate’s very image. Since then, comic books, television and cinema have offered us pirates of fiction, each more striking than the next. But these invented characters must not make us forget the incredible lives of the true pirates who crossed the seas. No need to add to their adventures: captures, betrayals, hidden treasures, tragic endings, epic love stories, ... A gallery of portraits of the most famous of them will give an overview. Our Bretons are not left out. Excellent sailors, they served the crown as privateers of the King and also had extraordinary adventures. What about the capture of Kent, a ship three times larger and much better equipped by the small corvette of the great Surcouf? Or what about those privateers who became high-ranking officers in the Royal Navy? Or those sailors who went on exploration trips that then gave their name to distant lands.... You will also discover the existence of the "King and Governor of the Seas" or the "Breton Tiger", also known under the sweet nickname of the "bloody lioness"!
Watch out, pirates straight ahead!
