Free visit of the Romanesque church of Laroche-Saint-Cydroine
The Saint-Cydroine church is a Romanesque church dating from the 11th and 12th centuries among the oldest in the department of Yonne, located in the commune of Laroche-Saint-Cydroine in France. It was originally an abbey church of a Benedictine priory dependent on the abbey of La Charité-sur-Loire. It is dedicated to Saint-Cydroine, a Roman Christian martyr of the 4th century beheaded by the Romans at the site of the building. Its two-storey octagonal bell tower, its sculptural decoration of its capitals make it one of the masterpieces of Romanesque art from Icalia. It has been classified as a historical monument since 1905.
Its originality is that above the transept, an octagonal tower is erected. The capitals of the transept offer a surprising animal and plant decoration that is particularly well preserved.
