The visit, about 2 hours, is free but requires good mobility and walking shoes. Pets are allowed but kept on a leash. The importance of this site from a historical point of view is made in particular because it is the former castle of the abbots of Cluny but also by the result of the work carried out recently which highlights the existence of one of the rare palm games of this time in France, a Filipino tower of remarkable size and a varied park. Some dates: 888: first trace of deed passed to the castle of Lourdon. Tenth century: The Council of Anse shows that it is protected by the Abbey of Cluny. 11th century: the citadel’s membership to the monks of Cluny is proven. 11th – 15th century: The castle resists all assaults except that of the bailiff of Mâcon in the 13th century who will sit there for two years. 16th century: Lourdon suffers many attacks and looting At the end of the 16th century: Claude de Guise, abbot of Cluny, will carry out various works of rehabilitation and improvement of the place. 1632: Becoming a threat, it was partially destroyed Since 2012, the Castrum Lordo association manages this 3.5 hectares site and works to safeguard it. www.chateaudelourdon.fr

About the location

Château de Lourdon
71250 Lournand
  • Saône-et-Loire
  • Bourgogne-Franche-Comté
The castle ruins occupy a trapezoidal platform of about one hectare. Part of the base of the wall, flanked to the south by a semi-destroyed circular tower, known as the Tower of the Pigeonnier, and to the north by the Tower of the Powder Magazine, whose upper floor emerges alone from the embankments. In the middle are the remains of two buildings located in the extension of each other. A round, half-timbered tower is attached to the west end of the eastern building wall, which supports a maximum of nine high square masonry pillars of 7.50 metres. A cartridge with the arms of Lorraine and the date 1586 allow to attribute to Claude de Guise, abbot of Cluny, this imposing surface construction (13 x 40 m) known as «game of palm».
