Built at the initiative of Hugues de Semur, abbot of Cluny and builder of the large Romanesque abbey church, the monks' chapel is the witness of the medieval priory. The richness and finesse of its painted decoration illustrate the know-how of the artists of the greatest workshops of the twelfth century at the time of the apogee of the Abbey of Cluny.
