Dominating the valley of Haut Allier, on the Régordane road connecting the Auvergne to the Languedoc, this former stronghold was an important stage for merchants important the South food as well as for pilgrims on their way to Saint-Gilles and coming from Puy-en-Velay. The noble mansions with stone walls and arcades, whose high facades stand against the Cevennes gusts, are witnesses of this prosperous epoch, and have seen generations of travellers pass by, sometimes famous, like the Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson who gave his name to this road which became the GR 70.
