Discovery route: the seaside villas organized around the viaduct, the station and the church of Wimereux,

by the Charm of Wimereux.

In Wimereux, for the European Heritage Days and with the partnership of the City, the Association of Friends of the Church has federated local associations for the valorization of the Heritage (civil, religious, military) to invite you to look up at the viaduct and to look at the construction of the railway track in Wimille, with its station, which was the decisive element in the genesis of the seaside resort of Wimereux (currently classified Remarkable Heritage Site). An independent urbanization of Wimille was created, with its city center, around its church (currently closed for restoration). The AEICW also offers for these JEPs some workshops on the trades that revolve around the life and construction of churches.
Starting from the exhibition on the theme of the development of Wimereux from the rise of the railway with the construction of the station of Wimille-Wimereux and the viaduct, we propose you, with the collaboration of the association "The Charm of Wimereux", to leave on Saturday 18 September at 5 pm (from the Salons de la Baie Saint-Jean) for a journey of discovery of the civil and seaside heritage of the resort, around the viaduct and the train station in-situ, commented by the guides of the Charme de Wimereux.
The Charme de Wimereux also organizes, during this Heritage Weed-end, alongside the exhibitions of the Wimille-Wimereux Cultural Centre and the AEICW, an exhibition (and a projection) of photos on seaside architecture.
To discover the history of the villas, the sale of volumes 1 and 2 of the admirable book entitled "The Charm of Wimereux" and published by this association will be proposed to you.
«Le Charme de Wimereux» is an original and unique two-volume edition. It is a collective work, developed by many Wimereusians for years…
Art photos by a talented photographer, unpublished old documents by passionate collectors, texts written by the owners of the villas and members of the Association reveal the architecture and history of the villas of Wimereux.
This guide book is an invitation to observe these magical places, full of seaside history.
Volume 2 was released in 2020: 6 years of research since the release of Volume 1 in 2014, hundreds of names collected, more than 300 family trees made on these owners builders in the nineteenth century of our beautiful seaside homes …
The association "Le Charme de Wimereux" is pleased to present the recent fruit of its work, through 57 villas, hotels and even some «Belles Disparues». All embellished by the old photos of Arnaud Destombes as well as the art photos of Daniel Poissonnier.
The Charm of Wimereux
The association "Le Charme de Wimereux", founded in 2002 on the initiative of Catherine Gras, has the mission: to highlight and animate the heritage of Wimereux in order to make it known and to make it loved, in particular its seaside part, built at the end of the nineteenth beginning of the twentieth century.
All summer long, guided tours, along the streets, make discover the architectural beauty and history of the villas.
In 2014 and 2020, the association published two books, based on research in the archives from 1820 to 1860 and testimonials from landlords, illustrated with magnificent photos telling the history of these remarkable homes.
"Discover, share and preserve", this is the project of the association "Le Charme de Wimereux".

The viaduct, built between 1859 and 1863 by engineer Théophile Dobelle on the territory of Wimille, spans the course of the «Wimereux» which gives its name to the hamlet which became an independent town in 1899\. 1862: the decree ordering the extension of the railway line from Boulogne to Calais has just been published opening access to the coastline and to the beautiful era of sea baths.
