Bibliothèque des Amis de l'Instruction
54 rue de Turenne 75003 Paris
Located in the heart of the Marais, a hundred steps from the Place des Vosges, the Library of Friends of Instruction was created in 1861\. It was then the first Parisian lending library, due to the popular initiative and based on the principle of association, preceding the municipal libraries. Its founders, workers and artisans of the Marais, gather the books of their choice. A collection of 20,000 volumes still lines the walls of the library, forming a severe but astonishing 19th-century décor. Today, time has made this modest, miraculously preserved setting a true setting. Together with the collection of original books and the history of the association, it forms a coherent ensemble which gives the Library of Friends of Instruction in the 3rd arrondissement its letters of nobility.
