The history of Strasbourg and its port are closely linked. River activities have always contributed to the vitality of the city.
In the Middle Ages, port activity concentrated on the Ill, near the Old Customs, under the impulse of the powerful Corporation of the Anchor which enjoyed for centuries a quasi-monopoly on the Rhine up to Mainz. In the 19th century, Strasbourg was connected to the French internal network by the canals of the Rhone to the Rhine and the Marne to the Rhine, opened in 1832 and 1853 respectively.
The Hospital Basin was dug in the 1880s for the reception of canal barges. Then the Austerlitz Basin, the true origin of today’s Rhine port, welcomed the first steamboat in 1892.
At the beginning of the 20th century the Basins of commerce and industry were dug, marking the direct opening on the Rhine. The port was then municipal. In 1926, the Autonomous Port of Strasbourg was created in the form of a public establishment, pursuant to a convention between the State and the
