Doctor, collector and engraver, Paul-Ferdinand Gachet (1828-1909) was a friend of many artists. Édouard Manet, Paul Cézanne, Camille Pissarro then Vincent Van Gogh stay in the garden and the house. Specialist in nervous diseases and curious about the discoveries of his time, he mingles all his life during medicine and art. Engraver, under the name of Paul Van Ryssel, he introduced Cézanne to etching and then Van Gogh in his studio under the roofs. This house, which he bought in 1872, became both a refuge and a place of inspiration: it appears on several canvases painted by Cézanne and Van Gogh, as a landmark in the landscape. The paintings in his impressive collection of works of art were donated by his children to the French state and are now exhibited at the Musée d'Orsay.
