The journey of the museum begins at the origins of the city of Antibes (Antipolis in Antiquity) which was first, in the 6th century BC, a Ligurian oppidum before being a Massaliot colony. A set of ceramics from Greece, Etruria and Great-Greece, produced between the 6th and 1st centuries BC, allow to evoke the series of painted vases, witnesses of trade between the different peoples of the Mediterranean world. In the 1st century BC, Antipolis became an autonomous Roman city attached to the province of Narbonne. From the Augustan period, the city was equipped with all the characteristic infrastructures of roman cities: theatres, amphitheatres, baths, aqueducts. Its privileged location quickly made it a thriving commercial port, home to intense maritime traffic, as evidenced by the numerous shipwrecks and their cargo discovered off its coast.
