The Museum of Fine Arts in Perpignan opened its doors to the public in 1833 in the former university. Initially constituted by personal collections, the museum is gradually being enriched. The State, under the Second Empire then the Third Republic, deposes many works. The museum is still at this date a place essentially open to artists. In the immediate post-war period, in 1949, there emerged a desire to highlight modern painting and defend a regional identity and culture. The ephemeral museum of Roussillon settles then in the lounges of the Hotel Pams. The museum closed its doors in October 1953, in favor of the "new" Hyacinthe Rigaud museum, completely redesigned with a modern and airy scenography. This success is encouraged by the State which accepts the deposit of a painting by the painter Hyacinthe Rigaud, one of the masterpieces of the museum "L'autoportrait au turban". Little by little the collections are expanding with remarkable works now making the reputation of the museum of
