Château de Sceaux
Hauts-de-Seine
Île-de-France
At 6 kilometers from the gates of Paris, in the heart of the 182 hectares of the departmental Domain of Sceaux, is a museum. This includes a 19th century castle, an 18th century Orangery, a 17th century pleasure pavilion and former stables. With the Aurore pavilion, the Castle constitutes the permanent visit route of the museum. These are places of transmission of the history of the Domain through the lives of their former and main owners, including their creator, Jean Baptiste Colbert, Minister of Finance of the Sun King. The collections evoke the art of living and French taste, from Louis XIV to Napoleon III, through paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, books, ceramics and furniture pieces. Each room reveals a universe in the living context of an inhabited residence. Renovated in 2020 by the largest French art houses, the Castle has regained its splendor of past centuries. Designed with respect for the know-how and decorative repertoires of each era, and attentive to the quality of materials, this museography allows each work to express its full aesthetic potential.
