The Théâtre de Privas has been part of the history of the city since the decision taken in July 1963 by Mr. Chaix (mayor) and the Municipal Council to create a national cultural institution in the capital city of Ardèche. After the adoption in 1964 of the architectural project designed by Mr. Bancilhon (architect), work began in March 1967\. The first season of the Théâtre de Privas, which has a hall with 800 seats, an exhibition gallery and annex spaces opened in October 1970\. Today, 47 years after the start of its first season, the Théâtre de Privas, a "Art en territoire" stage under agreement, and its exhibition gallery have a total attendance of nearly 36,000 (in Privas and in decentralization in the communes of Ardèche). Regarding the future, restructuring works (theatre, stage area, hall and heating) financed by the Communauté d'Agglomération Privas Centre Ardèche, the State, the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes Region and the Department of Ardèche are planned for 2019\. The Théâtre de Privas will then live two seasons outside the walls before making a new skin and reopening its doors to the Ardèche public.
