Le Doyenné belongs to a major historical and archaeological ensemble built around the Saint-Julien de Brioude basilica. It has undergone significant transformations over the centuries. The building had long-standing stability problems that required major restoration work over two years.
First of all, a partial deconstruction phase was necessary before the consolidation and stabilization work on the building. Access to the building has been replaced by a single access on the west facade, through an external glazed extension, at the location of the historic entrance.
The former volumetry of the staircase was restored by recreating a large oak staircase with a wrought iron handrail, reproducing the existing motif of an 18th century railing.
The transformation into a museum space proved to be particularly delicate given the constraints related to the building’s quality as a Historic Monument and in particular the respect that one owed to the original walls and the rediscovered mural painti
