As part of the European Heritage and Matrimoine Days, the Cité du Vin invites you for an exceptional meeting on the Beaujolais, labeled Geopark World UNESCO, with Daniel Paccoud, President of the Association of Friends of the Geopark, Floriane Fagot-Revurat, viticulture advisor at the Chambre d'agriculture du Rhône and Floriane Hélou-Frugier, Geopark project manager at the Syndicat Mixte du Beaujolais.
The meeting will take place in the Thomas Jefferson Auditorium and will also be broadcast online by Zoom.
Beaujolais is known worldwide for its wines. Located on the edge of the Massif Central, north-west of Lyon, and facing the Alps, Beaujolais has inherited one of the richest and most complex geologies in France and, in some respects, the Earth. The diversity of its subsoil and landscapes was born from the convergence of many geological phenomena that leave a marked mark in the living environment of the men of this territory. This history, more than 500 million years old, is combined here with the present, in the activities of man, history, heritage, culture and life of this region.
In 2018, the Beaujolais territory was labeled «UNESCO Global Geopark». Obtaining this label has made it possible to recognize the geological and landscape diversity of Beaujolais, but also to involve local actors committed to this sustainable territorial development.
During this meeting, we invite you to travel through time to better understand how man has shaped his living environment and in particular constituted the vineyard of Beaujolais. The peculiarity of Beaujolais is that from two majority grape varieties recognized by the appellation, develops a multitude of wines with very different profiles. This difference comes from the terroir and it is the geology that explains it, in connection with the know-how of the winemakers of Beaujolais.
