Les Augustins

The Renaissance in Toulouse is known for the quality of its architecture and the significance of its Humanist movement, expression of a Golden Age that is often linked to Toulouse's economical succes.

The exhibition aims to present the Renaissance of Toulouse in around 1500 and up until the dawn of the XVII Century by focusing on five major areas:

  • A wealthy and powerful city : Presentation of Toulouse at the start of the XVI Century, revealing its socio-economic and artistic make-up.

  • At the heart of an effervescent region: This second section centres on the region, of which Toulouse is the radiant centre, recalling the major peripheral artistic hubs (Albi, Auch,…) around the 1510-1530 period.

  • The confirmation of new tastes in Toulouse up until 1540: Showcasing representations of the myth of Palladia Tolosa (in which Toulouse rivals the Roman Athenian enlightenment) in its religious and civic aspects.

-The classical boom in Toulouse between 1530 and 1560: moving from a Renaissance of erudite motifs to a type of art that is connected to Royal art and artistic literature.

Troubles, exuberance and concord, between 1560 and 1620: Toulouse was at the centre of the political and religious troubles of the 1560-1590 period. Despite these conflicts, it is possible to see the permanence of assorted creative forms that stem from its mannerist exuberance.
