MEG x Histoire et Cité : The magical scrolls of Christian Ethiopia

The MEG (Musée d’ethnographie de Genève) has scrolls that show Ethiopian magical-religious practices. Made of sewn-together strips of parchment, these talismans were designed to protect and heal sick people. Created by dabtara—unordained, literate clerics—these objects combine prayers, magic spells, and figurative or abstract images. Anaïs Wion will help us understand them by recounting the history of spiritual medicine in Ethiopian Christian society.

Le Musée d’ethnographie de Genève conserve des rouleaux qui sont les témoins des pratiques magico-religieuses éthiopiennes. Composés de bandes de parchemin cousues, ces talismans ont été conçus pour protéger et guérir les malades. Réalisés par des dabtara – des clercs non ordonnés et lettrés –, ces objets associent prières, formules magiques et images figuratives ou abstraites. Anaïs Wion nous aidera à les comprendre, en évoquant l’histoire de la médecine spirituelle dans la société chrétienne éthiopienne.
