After Whitewashing, presented last season at Comédie de Genève, director, writer and performer Rébecca Chaillon returns with a new creation shaped as a fable, approaching fiction and storytelling as powerful tools that minoritised people can seize in order to overcome humiliation, fear and forced marginalisation. Inspired both by the place where she lives and works—Seine-Saint-Denis, the poorest département in France, located on the immediate outskirts of the capital—and by her travels to Martinique and New Orleans, La Parabole du Seum draws upon the inventiveness of outcasts and their capacity to create their own mythologies and rituals in order to survive the violence and coercion of normative systems.
With this “astrological and astronomical tale”, whose title playfully refers to Parable of the Sower, the landmark twentieth-century science-fiction novel by Black American author Octavia E. Butler, Rébecca Chaillon transforms the stage into a utopian space where new myths and rituals can emerge, where communities ostracised and discriminated against for being Black, overweight, lesbian or trans can gather together and once again imagine the possibility of a future.

Après Whitewashing accueilli la saison dernière à la Comédie, la metteuse en scène, autrice et performeuse Rébecca Chaillon imagine cette nouvelle création en forme de conte, travaillant la fiction et la narration comme des outils puissants dont peuvent s'emparer les personnes minorisées pour survivre à l'humiliation, la peur, la relégation forcée. Inspirée par le territoire dans lequel elle vit et travaille – la Seine-Saint-Denis, département le plus pauvre de France, à proximité immédiate de la capitale – autant que par ses voyages à la Martinique et à la Nouvelle-Orléans, Rébecca Chaillon compose dans La Parabole du Seum avec l'inventivité des marges et leurs manières de créer leurs propres mythologies et rituels pour survivre à l'impératif et la violence de la norme.
Avec ce « conte astrologique et astronomique » – qui emprunte son titre en le détournant à La Parabole du Semeur, chef d'œuvre de la science-fiction du XXe siècle écrit par l'autrice noire américaine Octavia E. Butler – Rébecca Chaillon fait de la scène un espace utopique où construire de nouveaux mythes, inventer de nouveaux rituels où les communautés ostracisées, discriminées parce qu'elles sont Noires, grosses, gouines, trans, peuvent se rassembler et imaginer, de nouveau, la possibilité d'un avenir.
