Is mathematics really just about calculations? How can a problem that fits into a single sentence keep scientists busy for years? Where do those famous “Eureka!” moments come from?
These questions will be at the heart of the opening lecture for the fall 2026 semester, which will take the form of a dialogue between two UNIGE experts, each offering the perspective of their respective disciplines: Hugo Duminil-Copin, 2022 Fields Medalist and professor of mathematics, and Emmanuel Sander, professor in psychology and educational sciences.

What if mathematics were about much more than just calculations? Beyond logic, intuition, creativity and emotions play a vital role in the emergence of ideas. Through accounts of discoveries and a dialogue between mathematics and psychology, this event demonstrates that mathematics is, above all, a human adventure, and invites us to rethink the way we learn and teach it. In this age of algorithms and artificial intelligence, mathematics is much more than a set of techniques; it is a valuable tool for reasoning, exercising critical thinking and gaining a better understanding of the world around us.

Les mathématiques sont-elles vraiment une affaire de calcul? Comment un problème qui tient en une seule phrase peut-il occuper des scientifiques pendant des années? D’où viennent les fameux moments «Eurêka»?
Ces questions seront au cœur de la conférence d’ouverture du semestre d’automne 2026, qui prendra la forme d’un dialogue entre deux spécialistes de l’UNIGE, chacun apportant le point de vue de sa discipline: Hugo Duminil-Copin, médaillé Fields 2022 et professeur en mathématiques, et Emmanuel Sander, professeur en psychologie et en sciences de l'éducation.

En retraçant grandes et petites découvertes, les deux conférenciers – coauteurs de l’ouvrage «De l’autre côté du tableau noir. Les mathématiques à visage humain» (Éditions du Seuil, Septembre 2026) – proposeront une immersion dans les coulisses de la création mathématique. Ils mettront en lumière l’importance cruciale de l’intuition, des erreurs et des émotions dans cette discipline, montrant qu’elle est avant tout une aventure humaine. Ils évoqueront également son omniprésence dans notre société, à travers les statistiques, les probabilités, les algorithmes et l’intelligence artificielle.
