If Le Cid has become the reference of classical French theatre, the play sparked a controversy at its creation in 1637 that remains historic to this day. Accused of overstepping the rule of the three unities and of plausibility, with its multiple plotlines, Corneille nonetheless managed to establish his tragicomedy.
The play opens with a slap: Count don Gomès, Chimène's father, strikes old don Diègue out of jealousy. His son, Rodrigue, challenges him to a duel and leaves orphaned the woman he was meant to marry. Chimène then relentlessly demands justice from the King, suppressing her own feelings. Meanwhile, the Infanta, the king's daughter, hides her own love for Rodrigue, a love her rank compels her to sacrifice.
From Cyrano de Bergerac to this season's revival of The Impostures of Scapin, Denis Podalydès leads the Troupe in productions marked by pictorial beauty and deep embodiment. With Le Cid, set in 11th-century Spain, he returns to the trial of the code of honour: "The Cornelian character, man or woman, is in love, and that love runs against this code, breaking against it. A powerful contradiction divides them, ravages them.
This existential doubt transforms them, burns them, illuminates and darkens them all at once, making them come into being in their own eyes, in the eyes of the group, of the audience." First staged last season, the production will be performed for the first time in the Salle Richelieu.
