Jean Dunand (1877-1942) war ein vielseitiger Künstler und ein bedeutender Vertreter der Art-déco-Bewegung. Er stellte das Experimentieren stets in den Mittelpunkt seines Schaffens und versuchte, seinen Materialien neue Ausdrucksformen zu entlocken. Als unbestrittener Meister der Dinanderie, der Kunst der handgefertigten Metallwaren, setzte er komplexe dekorative Verfahren ein, um die gehämmerten Oberflächen der von ihm gefertigten Objekte zu betonen. Als Virtuose des Lackierens verband er Pflanzenharz mit Metall und wandte es später auf Möbel, Tafeln, Schmuck und Bucheinbände an, was den Weg für eine neue Ästhetik ebnete.
Zahlreiche außergewöhnliche Leihgaben aus dem Besitz der Familie Dunand bereichern diese Ausstellung, die eine Hommage an diesen Alchimisten der Moderne darstellt, der an der Genfer Kunstgewerbeschule ausgebildet wurde und die Pariser Szene der Zwischenkriegszeit entscheidend geprägt hat.

Jean Dunand (1877-1942) was an artist of many talents and a significant figure in the Art Deco movement. He always placed experimentation at the heart of his practice and sought to draw out new expressive forms from his materials. As an undisputed master of dinanderie, the art of hand-worked metalware, he used complex decorative processes to accentuate the hammered surfaces of the objects he rendered. As a virtuoso of lacquer, he wedded plant resin with metal and later applied it to furniture, panels, jewellery, and bookbinding, which led the way for new aesthetics.
Numerous exceptional loans from the Dunand family enrich this exhibition as it pays homage to this alchemist of modernity, trained at the Geneva School of Industrial Arts, who was such a brilliant influence on the interwar Parisian scene.

Artiste aux multiples talents, figure majeure du mouvement Art déco, Jean Dunand (1877-1942) a toujours placé l’expérimentation au cœur de sa pratique et cherché à puiser dans la matière de nouvelles formes d’expression. Ce maître incontesté dans l’art de la dinanderie magnifie la surface des objets qu’il a façonnés au marteau par de complexes procédés décoratifs. En virtuose de la laque, il marie cette résine végétale au métal, avant d’en revêtir meubles, panneaux, bijoux, reliures de livres, ouvrant ainsi la voie à de nouvelles esthétiques.
Cette exposition, qui bénéficie de nombreux prêts exceptionnels de la famille Dunand, rend hommage à cet alchimiste de la modernité, formé à l’École des arts industriels de Genève, qui s’est si brillamment illustré sur la scène parisienne de l’entre-deux guerres.
