Cherbourg, in November 1957. Geneviève and her mother run an umbrella store. The girl is in love with Guy, a young mechanic, much to the displeasure of her mother who would prefer to see her marry Roland Cassard, a rich diamond dealer. Called to the army, Guy is about to leave for Algeria. The day before his departure, Geneviève gives herself to him and swears to wait for him. But months passed and the letters of the young soldier became increasingly rare. Pregnant, idle, pressed by her mother, Geneviève finally consents, death in the soul, to marry Roland. Eighteen months after his departure, Guy returned to Cherbourg with a leg injury…
