Ein Müller hinterließ drei Kindern, die er hatte, nur seine Mühle, seinen Esel und seine Katze. Die Teilungen wurden bald vollzogen, weder der Notar noch der Staatsanwalt wurden gerufen. Sie hätten bald das ganze arme Erbe gegessen. Der Älteste hatte die Mühle, der Zweite den Esel, und der Jüngste hatte nur den Kater. Un Mugnaio lasciò per tutti i beni a tre figli che aveva, il suo Mulino, il suo asino e il suo gatto. Le ripartizioni furono presto fatte, né il Notaio né il Procuratore vi furono chiamati. Avrebbero presto mangiato tutto il povero patrimonio. Il primogenito ebbe il Mulino, il secondo ebbe l'asino, e il più giovane ebbe solo il gatto. Quest'ultimo non poteva consolarsi di avere un così povero lotto: I miei fratelli, diceva, potranno guadagnarsi da vivere onestamente mettendosi insieme; per me, quando avrò mangiato il mio gatto, e mi sarò fatto un manicotto della sua pelle, dovrò morire di fame. Il Gatto che ascoltava questo discorso, ma che non lo fece finta, gli disse con aria calma e seria: Non vi affliggete, mio maestro, non dovete che darmi un Sacco, e farmi fare un paio di Stivali per andare nella boscaglia, e vedrete che non siete così male divisi come credete.

Un Meunier ne laissa pour tous biens à trois enfants qu'il avait, que son Moulin, son âne, et son chat. Les partages furent bientôt faits, ni le Notaire, ni le Procureur n'y furent point appelés. Ils auraient eu bientôt mangé tout le pauvre patrimoine. L'aîné eut le Moulin, le second eut l'âne, et le plus jeune n'eut que le Chat. Ce dernier ne pouvait se consoler d'avoir un si pauvre lot : Mes frères, disait-il, pourront gagner leur vie honnêtement en se mettant ensemble ; pour moi, lorsque j'aurai mangé mon chat, et que je me serai fait un manchon de sa peau, il faudra que je meure de faim. Le Chat qui entendait ce discours, mais qui n'en fit pas semblant, lui dit d'un air posé et sérieux : Ne vous affligez point, mon maître, vous n'avez qu'à me donner un Sac, et me faire faire une paire de Bottes pour aller dans les broussailles, et vous verrez que vous n'êtes pas si mal partagé que vous croyez.

Un molinero dejó para todos los bienes a tres hijos que tenía, que su molino, su burro, y su gato. Pronto se hicieron los repartos, ni el Notario ni el Procurador fueron llamados. Pronto habrían comido todo el pobre patrimonio. El mayor tuvo el molino, el segundo el burro, y el más joven el gato. Este último no podía consolarse de tener un lote tan pobre: Mis hermanos, decía, podrán ganarse la vida honradamente poniéndose juntos; para mí, cuando haya comido mi gato y me haya hecho un manguito de su piel, tendré que morir de hambre. El Gato que oyó este discurso, pero que no lo fingió, le dijo con una actitud serena y seria: No os aflijais, mi señor, solo tenéis que darme una bolsa, y hacerme hacer un par de botas para ir a los matorrales, y verás que no estás tan mal compartido como crees.
