In 1848, a group of British artists, the Pre-Raphaelites, broke with the codes of Victorian England and denounced an art that they considered corrupted since Raphael. Their rejection of academic art and their quest for sincerity, sometimes considered naive, arouses passionate debates.
For a long time, the history of the Pre-Raphaelites was written in masculine form around its heroes John Everett Millais, William Holman Hunt and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. But recent research reveals the central and ongoing role of women within the brotherhood. The exhibition aims to retrace how these women artists seized the movement, while the status of women in Britain is changing.

En 1848, un groupe d’artistes britanniques, les Préraphaélites, rompent avec les codes de l’Angleterre victorienne et dénoncent un art qu’ils jugent corrompu depuis Raphaël. Leur rejet de l’art académique et leur quête de sincérité, parfois jugée naïve, suscite des débats passionnés.
Longtemps, l’histoire des Préraphaélites s’est écrite au masculin autour de ses héros John Everett Millais, William Holman Hunt et Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Or la recherche récente révèle le rôle central et continu des femmes au sein de la confrérie. L’exposition se propose de retracer la façon dont ces artistes femmes se sont emparées du mouvement, alors que la condition féminine en Grande-Bretagne est en pleine mutation.

In 1848 brak een groep Britse kunstenaars, de Pre-Raphaelites, met de codes van Victoriaans Engeland en klaagde een kunst aan die ze als corrupt beschouwden sinds Raphaël. Hun afwijzing van de academische kunst en hun zoektocht naar oprechtheid, soms naïef, lokte gepassioneerde debatten uit.
Lange tijd werd de geschiedenis van de Pre-Raphaelites geschreven in het mannelijk rond zijn helden John Everett Millais, William Holman Hunt en Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Recent onderzoek toont echter aan dat vrouwen een centrale en voortdurende rol spelen binnen de broederschap. De tentoonstelling wil de manier waarop deze vrouwelijke kunstenaars de beweging hebben gegrepen, volgen, terwijl de situatie van de vrouwen in Groot-Brittannië aan het veranderen is.
