About the location

Château d'Espeyran
30800 Saint-Gilles
  • Gard
  • Occitanie
The site of Espeyran, as the last archaeological excavations(searches) showed it, was inhabited by the Greeks from the VIth century before our era. In the Middle Ages, Espeyran becomes a village of the abbey of Saint Giles within whom the abbots possessed up to Revolution, a summer residence in the middle of wood. The domain of Espeyran, becomes very national, acquired in 1791 by Guillaume Sabatier, member(limb) of a family of large retailers and of businessmen of Montpellier. The latter(This last) leaves it to her sister, Marie, who leaves it to her nephew Félix herself. In 1818, the domain is inherited by Frederick Sabatier, who makes a modern farm. He(It) does the park up, by having concern(marigold) to introduce various and innovative gasolines(essences) there. His son, Guillaume, is charging up of the domain from 1864, and begins(undertakes) big work in 1880s, giving to the castle his current aspect. In 1963, Guy Sabatier leaves the domain of Espeyran to the State which places him then under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture (French National Archives).
In 5 km of the centre of the city of Saint Giles, the castle of Espeyran proposes a cultural and natural site of a big(great) diversity and of a great value: an environmental park, in boundaries of the agricultural territory of the costière, overhangs the marshy zones of the Camargue Gardoise and more particularly of the pond of Scamandre, a castle the XIXth century and of its whole furniture, an equestrian heritage, an archaeological field and finally the national centre of records preservation microfilmed and digitally converted by French National Archives.
