Surimono
Following its 2014 exhibition on kabuki, the MAH now continues its exploration of its Japanese prints collection through some one hundred of its surimono. Translated literally, surimono means printed work and refers to opulently rendered sheets offered at meetings and holidays or meant to mark important occasions. Their limited edition as well as their sumptuous printing technique make them particularly precious objects. The MAH is for¬tunate to hold a rich collection of large format pieces produced in Kyoto and Osaka that specifically represent the performing arts (theatre kabuki, bunraku, shamisen players, etc.). The Surimono exhibition opens a window onto the complexity of Japanese culture through poetry, calligraphy but also the depiction of celebrations, seasons and other subjects. Among the themes approached, that of the geisha is highlighted in particular.
