Memoirs and Impressions – 60 Years of Swiss Archaeology in Sudan
This exhibition at UNIGE invites visitors to follow in the footsteps of Swiss archaeologists who, season after season, have unearthed the forgotten history of this region from the sands of Sudan.

December 1965, northern Sudan. A team of Swiss archaeologists began exploring the Tabo site, marked by two impressive, millennia-old royal colossi lying on the ground. Thus began an extraordinary human and scientific adventure that continues to this day around the ancient city of Kerma and the Doukki Gel site, a fascinating place that sheds new light on this distant past.
The exhibition invites visitors to follow in the footsteps of these scientists who, season after season, are unearthing from the sands of Sudan the forgotten history of this region and the civilization that flourished there. Through some 100 archival photographs and excavation journals, it brings to life the memory of the fieldwork and discoveries accumulated over the decades.

Cette exposition de l’UNIGE invite à suivre les pas des archéologues suisses qui, campagne après campagne, ont fait émerger des sables du Soudan l’histoire oubliée de cette région.

Décembre 1965, nord du Soudan. Une équipe d’archéologues suisses entreprend l’exploration du site de Tabo, marqué par deux impressionnants colosses royaux millénaires, gisant sur le sol. Commence alors une aventure humaine et scientifique hors du commun, qui se poursuit encore aujourd’hui autour de la cité antique de Kerma et du site de Doukki Gel, un lieu fascinant qui éclaire d’un jour nouveau ce passé lointain.
L’exposition invite à suivre les pas de ces scientifiques qui, campagne après campagne, font émerger des sables du Soudan l’histoire oubliée de cette région et de la civilisation qui s’y est épanouie. À travers une centaine de photographies d’archives et de carnets de fouilles, elle restitue la mémoire vivante du travail de terrain et des découvertes accumulées au fil des décennies.
