The history of Vitry-le-François begins in 1544, when the troops of Charles V destroyed Vitry-en-Perthois, ancient fortified capital of Perthois. King Francis I then decided to erect a new fortified city a few kilometers away, on the banks of the Marne. In 1545, Vitry-le-François was born, designed by the Italian architect Girolamo Marini who gave it a remarkable grid plan. Despite the destruction of more than 90% of the city during the Second World War, reconstruction has preserved this geometric organization, still offering today beautiful urban perspectives. In the 16th century, the city was built around a vast central square and opened at the four cardinal points through imposing gates. In 1896, ramparts and ditches are removed to accompany the extension of the city, leaving only a gate. If many buildings were damaged during the bombings of 1940 and 1944, some were restored or spared and today constitute a precious historical heritage.
