Allen Ginsberg seizes words like a poetic weapon, bypasses the power of conventional language to tell of his loneliness, his exclusion, his madness and his cry for humanity. The strength of the HOWL poem lies in the rhythm, the virtuosity of the language and the images it produces: it is a visceral poem written during an afternoon under the effects of drugs. Ginsberg's cry cost him prison and censorship in 1956.
