The Trojan War is a timeless myth. Its narrative, which oscillates between abduction and seduction, reality and illusion, has endured through the centuries, constantly reinventing itself. Euripides offered a radical version: Helen was never in Troy; only an illusion of herself was carried there (a cloud), while she remained hidden in Egypt. Thus, the Greeks and Trojans would have waged a war without foundation, over a chimera. It is on this interpretation of a war fought blindly that Anne Carson builds NORMA JEANE BAKER OF TROY. In it, Helen becomes Marilyn Monroe—Norma Jeane Baker, by her birth name. Her Menelaus is named Arthur, after Arthur Miller, the writer and Marilyn’s husband. From then on, Helen and Norma Jeane become one and the same: a woman shaped by male gazes, the object of fantasies and violence, trapped in a fate that is not her own.

La guerre de Troie est un mythe intemporel. Son récit, qui oscille entre enlèvement et séduction, réalité et illusion, a traversé les siècles en se réinventant sans cesse. Euripide en proposa une version radicale : Hélène ne fut jamais à Troie, seule une illusion d’elle-même y fut emportée (un nuage), tandis qu’elle demeurait cachée en Égypte. Ainsi, Grecs et Troyens auraient livré une guerre sans fondement, pour une chimère.
C’est sur cette lecture d’une guerre menée aveuglement qu’Anne Carson bâtit NORMA JEANE BAKER DE TROIE. Hélène y devient Marilyn Monroe – Norma Jeane Baker, de son nom de naissance. Son Ménélas s’appelle Arthur, comme Arthur Miller, écrivain et époux de Marilyn. Dès lors, Hélène et Norma Jeane ne font plus qu’un : une femme modelée par les regards masculins, objet de fantasmes et de violence, prise dans un destin qui ne lui appartient pas.
