About the location

Bourg de Callen
Bourg, 40430 Callen
  • Landes
  • Nouvelle-Aquitaine
The town of Callen, located on the banks of the Petite Leyre, was marked in the middle of the 19th century by the transfer of its communal centre. The old town, now completely extinct, is documented only by the Napoleonic cadastre and the municipal deliberations of the contemporary era. From 1860, a construction campaign was launched in the district of Trauquebert; new communal buildings (town hall, schools for girls and boys) were built along the crossing of the village, road from Luxey to the junction with that of Sore. The church of Saint-Pierre was erected during this period, as were the vast majority of the houses around it.
Overall, the municipality of Callen is composed of many neighborhoods whose habitat and agricultural dependencies are still very well preserved. The Landes houses, ranging from the seventeenth to the end of the nineteenth centuries, are mostly built in wood panel with awning and attic, some of them are masonry in alios stone or in medium limestone apparatus.
