Valsanzibio was brought to its present splendour in the second half of the seventeenth century by the Venetian noble Zuane Francesco Barbarigo, helped by his sons Antonio and Gregorio. It was the latter, the eldest son Gregory, Cardinal, Bishop of Padua and future Saint, to inspire the high symbolism of the project due to the main architect and fontaniere Pontifical Luigi Bernini. In fact, the then Cardinal Gregorio Barbarigo, following a solemn vow made by his Father to our Lord in 1631, wanted the garden of Valsanzibio to be a monumental emblem of the way of perfection that leads man from error to truth, from ignorance to revelation. This exceptional example of a Baroque garden consists of over 60 statues carved in Istrian stone, largely the work of the Merengo (see note 2 below), and as many smaller sculptures that are integrated with architecture, streams, waterfalls, fountains, ponds, water jokes and ponds, among countless trees and shrubs, on more than 10 hectares of land.
