Gardens and parks always simultaneously appeal to all five senses of a person who pay a visit in them. We are usually aware of our sense of smell when we smell strong smells. Additional comfort is created with fragrant plants, where the source of smell is mostly flowers, but can also be leaves and other plant parts. In the fall of 2023, we renovated the fragrant garden in the Volčji Potok Arboretum, which was designed by the Croatian landscape architect Kornelija Benyovsky Šoštarić. At it, we will talk about the plants involved, their maintenance and the "annual program" of pleasant smells from early spring to winter. Professional guidance is free, entrance fee to the park is payable. Led by Matjaž Mastnak from Arboretum Volčji Potok. Applications are not required. Location: Fragrant Garden next to the Indonesian Pavilion.

Volčji Potok Arboretum is the most visited horticultural facility in Slovenia. In the last twenty years it became famous for its spring flower shows. Visitors from all parts of the country and from abroad come to Arboretum to be fascinated by millions of daffodil, tulip and other spring flowers.

Volčji Potok Arboretum was established in 1952 by University of Ljubljana. The institution took over the estate till 1948 owned by Souvan family. The late private owners bought the property in 1882 and plated park around the mansion house. The renaissance and later barocco style mansion house was destroyed in the World War II. In 1950 the estate was legally declared a place of cultural and natural heritage of national importance.

University created a collection of woody plants for research and educative purposes. Later the Arboretum became independent. Today it manages the park, produces plants in its own nurseries, runs a garden centre, employs a group of landscape architects and does practical landscaping all over Slovenia.

In Arboretum, 80 hectare of ecologically very diversified grounds are occupied by about 2.500 taxa of trees and shrubs. The plant collection has been thoughtfully designed as a landscape park, including well-conserved rare natural biocoenosis. In peaceful and aesthetic scenery visitors are given an opportunity to experience beauty and uniqueness of man modified environment.
