Built at an altitude of 620 metres, the Hohlandsbourg Castle is surrounded by a forest with a total area of nearly 1700 ha. A wide variety of hardwood and resinous forest species gives the massif an interesting natural richness. The forest forms an advance of the Vosges piedmont looking on the one hand on the valley of the Fecht, and on the other hand on the plain of Alsace. This situation once represented a privileged strategic position which explains the presence of numerous castles on such a limited space: the castle of Hohlandsbourg but also the Wahlenbourg, Weckmund, Dagsbourg, Hagueneck and Pflixbourg.
A fine example of the evolution of military architecture in Alsace from the 13th century until the Thirty Years' War, it is the largest monument left by the Habsburgs in Upper Alsace.
A scenographic itinerary gives to see and understand the history, the organization and the place of the castle, from the initial site of the Bronze Age to the contemporary era.
