At the time of the construction of the Expiatory Chapel at the beginning of the 19th century, the Madeleine district was still little urbanized. Built around an earthen embankment of the old cemetery, the monument dominates the neighborhood made of a sparser and low habitat. Over the years, the environment evolves and transforms to integrate into a neighborhood whose architecture tells us the history of the nineteenth to the twentieth century.
