The event is an open air exhibition of our research about the lost identity of small residential gardens in Bucharest. Bucharest’s historic gardens, once featured in paintings, photographs and stories, are disappearing. Increasing urban density, changing ownership and renovations are transforming these generous green spaces into decorative gardens without identity or completely eliminating them. Perceived by foreign travelers as representing a garden city, Bucharest has never corresponded to Ebenezer Howard’s definition of garden cities, but has been, for a long time, a city characterized by the presence of numerous private courtyards and cultivated spaces.
We built this project on a working hypothesis: Can the Bucharest garden be considered an element of urban identity? The Bucharest garden is distinguished by an organic, modest character and devoid of Western European or Eastern geometric rigors. It harmoniously combines ornamental flowers such as roses, tulips and chrysanthemums with utilitarian plants – grapevines, lilacs, jasmine, fruit trees and even vegetables. This type of garden, rich in scents and expression, includes traditional elements such as vine arches, flowerpots, summerhouses, planters, stone pedestals, outdoor tables and paved paths. Studying these typologies and deepening their identity character is an essential step for the recovery of an almost disappeared component of urban heritage.
