The garden as a lost paradise or as a symbol for the Virgin Mother of God? Since the Middle Ages, monasteries have been the guardians of garden culture in Europe. Galler’s monastery plan envisages different gardens: in addition to utility gardens, there were also ornamental gardens that served for relaxation and meditation. This is also the case in the Salem Monastery! The tour explains the change of the monastery gardens to the landscape park of the 19th century. 18th century, when the monastery became a castle of the Margraves of Baden. Old trees, including some exotics such as ginko, thuja and redwoods, are still witnesses of this era.
