Ferns is distinguished from the great castles of the Loire by a sober and powerful architecture. The walls are made of hard limestone rubble from Beauce, while a softer and white stone, the tuffeau of the edges of the Cher, is used for moulded or sculpted parts. Listed as a Historic Monument in 1912, the building became a State property in 1932.
